Reflections
on Islam and Sufism
What
is Islam? How can we begin to understand the role of
Islam in 2004? What is the relationship between war
and religion? What is Sufism? What is the relationship
between Islam and Sufism? What exactly is purification,
and how is Islam related to purification? In these two
interviews, Sufi Master Shah Nazar Seyyed Ali Kianfar
responds to these complex questions in depth. He explains
the foundations and principles of Islam and of Sufism,
and discusses in detail the importance and the practice
of purification.Heidi

Sufism at a Time of World Crisis
Dr. Kianfar reveals that a time such as this, when the world is viewed as in a state of chaos and crisis, brings us closer to our selves: Is peace possible? What is the role of religion and politics? What is the expectation of the Divine in creating creation? Are we just recycle units, or are we something greater?

The
Soul's Longing
Sufism Symposium 2001
From the dawn of existence, human beings have longed
to understand. They have spent millenniums in the
universe of the heart with hopes of seeing the unseen.
This primordial yearning was cultivated by the earliest
Sufi mystics at the advent of Islam. For centuries
after, great salek(s) have conveyed their insight
in numerous magnificence forms in order to nourish
the hearts of fellow seekers. These mystics expressed
their desires to celebrate the glory of Unity in complex
and revolutionary ways. The International Association
of Sufism honored these expressions of our Divine
desire to know at the 2001 Sufism Symposium, themed:
The Souls Longing: A Language of Spirit. From
March 23 until March 25, 2001, speakers and participants
were enraptured in camaraderie as their own longing
to unite with the Divine transcended cultural and
philosophical barriers. Cassettes, Box Set. $300.00.

Spirit
& Word: The Qur'an (Koran)
from The Forum at Grace Cathedral
Speakers
include
Shah
Nazar Seyyed Dr. Ali Kianfar
Very Rev. Alan Jones
Professor Saleh Arthur Scott
Description
Unlike
the diverse stories of the Judeo-Christian Bible,
the Qur'an was given once from Allah to the Prophet
Muhammad (pbuh), and is thus considered to be the
pure and direct Word of God, unmingled with human
commentary. Yet the Muslim world interprets the text
in widely different ways, from the intellectual focus
of Sufism to the political agenda of the Taliban.
In this last Forum in the "Spirit & Word:
Sacred Texts for Spiritual Formation" series,
the Very Rev. Alan Jones discusses the Qur'an with
Shah Nazar Seyyed Dr. Ali Kianfar, co-founder of the
International Association of Sufism, and Professor
Saleh Arthur Scott, Professor of Islamic Studies at
the University of San Francisco.
